Hickenlooper: Senate Must End Vacation & Get Back to Work to Extend Unemployment Insurance

Today, John Hickenlooper highlighted the need for the Senate to pass critical legislation to extend the expanded unemployment insurance benefits for the millions of Americans out of work before the program expires on July 31st. Yesterday, John called on both Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to end the scheduled two-week recess and return to work to pass urgent relief for Colorado families and small businesses.

“Over six weeks ago, Senator Cory Gardner made a big stink of keeping the Senate from its Memorial Day vacation because it was ‘unfathomable’ they wouldn’t address the rapidly growing unemployment crisis in our nation. Unsurprisingly, he caved. Since then, millions more Americans have lost their jobs and are now struggling to make rent, pay their mortgage, and put food on the table. This dysfunction and inaction is exactly why Americans are fed up with Washington.

“What is truly ‘unfathomable’ is that the Senate is on a two week vacation when the deadline to expand this program is only three weeks away. Now, more than ever, the Senate needs to get to work, and Cory Gardner needs to go back to Washington and deliver results for a change.”
