“We need to make sure that Senator Gardner upholds the commitment he made four years ago”
While Senator Cory Gardner dodges questions about the Supreme Court vacancy, John Hickenlooper called on him to honor his own words from four years ago and energized Colorado volunteers to flip the Senate. He also spoke to the legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the importance of this election for the future of the Supreme Court.
Hickenlooper said:
“Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an icon… We will feel her loss and celebrate her life and legacy for generations… More than four years ago, Senator Gardner said, and I quote, ‘our next election is too soon and the stakes are too high. The American people deserve a role in this process as the next Supreme Court Justice will influence the direction of this country for years to come.’ Now we’re just 45 days from the election, and the stakes couldn’t be any higher… From marriage equality to workplace discrimination to reproductive health care, Justice Ginsburg was crucial to protecting our most basic rights.
“We need to make sure that Senator Gardner upholds the commitment he made four years ago… The Senate must not confirm a new Justice until the American people have weighed in at the ballot box and until the President elected in November has the opportunity to make this decision. And while we are working to keep the pressure on Cory Gardner to keep his word, we also need to redouble our efforts to make sure that we win this Senate seat and elect Joe Biden to be our next President. And that’s what you’re all doing here today! So, thank you.”
