Hickenlooper Attended Denver NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet, Received Award from Colorado Springs Ministerial Alliance, Marched in 35th Annual Marade
John Hickenlooper celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend with back to back events from Colorado Springs to Denver. He stood shoulder to shoulder with community leaders and elected officials to honor Dr. King and recommit to the fight to ensure his Dream becomes a reality in Colorado and across the nation.
Saturday, Hickenlooper attended the 36th annual Freedom Fund Banquet for the Denver NAACP to support youth-oriented programs. Community leaders, organizers, and supporters came together to enjoy the festive gala.
Sunday, in Colorado Springs, John Hickenlooper received the Barack Obama-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award from the Colorado Springs Ministerial Alliance which recognizes individuals who succeed despite challenging times. The award honors community officials for advocacy following in the legacy of Dr. King.
“Today we face a crisis of faith and division, more than any other point since Dr. King,” said Hickenlooper. “He called it the ‘fierce urgency of now.’ For every little boy or girl in America looking for role models and basic truths, there is an urgency of now. I am honored to receive this award from my dear friends, and look forward to furthering Dr. King’s legacy by tackling issues like criminal justice reform, education, and health care with a ‘fierce urgency of the now.’”
“John Hickenlooper is the example of never giving up on your dream,” said PM Wynn, Vice President of the Colorado Springs Ministerial Alliance. “The ‘I Have a Dream’ award, we dream, we reflect and we go after our dream. The Barack Obama award, is for an individual that has done what they said they were going to do in spite of the challenges that they face or came across.”
And on Monday, John Hickenlooper marched shoulder to shoulder with Colorado leaders in the 35th annual Marade to honor and remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Hickenlooper helped lead the march alongside Governor Jared Polis, Mayor Michael Hancock, Congressman Ed Perlmutter, CO Secretary of State Jena Griswold, State Representative Leslie Herod, and Denver School Board At-large Director Tay Anderson to Civic Center Park where Hickenlooper introduced the keynote speaker, Pastor Eldrin Bell.
