Under Governor Hickenlooper, Colorado Adopted Stricter Emissions Standards Now Under Attack by Trump Administration
John Hickenlooper, candidate for U.S. Senate from Colorado, released the following statement denouncing Donald Trump and Cory Gardner following the news that the Trump Administration will be gutting states’, including Colorado’s, stricter vehicle emission standards—part of a rollback even auto manufacturers do not want.
“Colorado has the highest average elevation in the US, so the same level of air pollution here is far more damaging to people’s health than in other states. Most automobile manufacturers don’t want to be responsible for the public health damage from increasing air pollution, not to mention accelerating climate change. Again, Senator Cory Gardner is failing to raise a pinky finger against Trump’s dangerous actions.“
“As Governor, I was proud to take steps to require that vehicles meet stricter low-emissions standards, standards that even the auto industry has embraced. It’s shameful that President Trump would actively undo the critical progress we’ve made. It’s time for change in Washington and for Colorado to have a Senator who will stand up for our state (and our planet).”
Last year, Governor Hickenlooper signed an executive order requiring vehicles meet low-emission standards by 2025. These tighter standards would be revoked under the Trump Administration’s latest move.Last month, Hickenlooper spoke out against the Trump Administration’s rollback of methane regulations that Colorado helped pioneer.
