Founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, GIFFORDS leads fight for gun safety legislation
Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper announced that GIFFORDS PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, endorsed his campaign for reelection.
“As governor, we took on the NRA and won. We successfully passed life-saving gun safety legislation like universal background checks and a ban on large capacity magazines. We haven’t let up on our fight against gun violence since,” said Hickenlooper. “We’re grateful to continue to work with GIFFORDS PAC, pushing for more commonsense gun safety laws.”
“Senator Hickenlooper has been a champion for gun safety since day one, leading strong efforts to keep his state safe from senseless violence and championing lifesaving policy changes in response to some of Colorado’s worst tragedies,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “Never one to stand by and let the corporate gun lobby put our communities at risk, Senator Hickenlooper flipped a red seat in 2020 and has tirelessly pushed for needed action in Washington. In his first term, he cast key votes on landmark bills like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and more. GIFFORDS PAC is proud to endorse Senator Hickenlooper for reelection to the U.S. Senate.”
Led by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, GIFFORDS works to reduce gun violence and save lives by empowering voters with information and supporting candidates who will fight for safer gun laws.
Hickenlooper has made gun safety a priority throughout his career in public service. As mayor of Denver, he was a member of the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns. After eight years in that role, he took office as governor of Colorado in 2011.
In 2012, when a gunman killed 12 people in a movie theater in Aurora, Gov. Hickenlooper honored the victims not only with words, but with action, signing three new gun safety bills into law less than a year later. Those laws, which placed limits on ammunition magazines, required universal background checks, and charged gun owners for those background checks, were some of the first to be passed in the country after the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy propelled gun safety into the forefront of the national conversation in 2013.
In the Senate, he helped pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which expanded red flag laws, helped address the boyfriend loophole, expanded background checks for young gun purchases, and made historic investments in community-based mental health and violence prevention programs.
Hickenlooper also co-sponsors key gun safety legislation including the Assault Weapons Ban of 2025, the Background Check Expansion Act, and Ethan’s Law.
