Seven Years Ago Today, Gardner Cast One of His 13 Votes to Destroy the ACA
If it’s a day ending in “y,” Senator Cory Gardner is lying about his crusade to gut coverage for people with pre-existing conditions — and fact checkers are continuing to debunk him.
Seven years ago today, Gardner voted to defund the Affordable Care Act which protects coverage for the 2.4 million Coloradans with pre-existing conditions.
But Gardner is still airing a TV ad lying about his health care record. Last week, KDVR joined 9News and experts and advocates to become the latest outlet to call out Gardner’s real record of voting to undermine protections for pre-existing conditions.
WATCH:
Gardner has voted nine times to eliminate insurance protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
Verdict: True
Sometimes Gardner voted to eliminate the protections for pre-existing conditions while he also voted against supporting the protections.
That said, on Aug. 6, 2020, Gardner introduced his own health care bill that reads, in part, “A group health plan and a health insurance issuer offering group or individual health insurance coverage may not impose any pre-existing condition exclusion…”
The bill has quite a few critics, including the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Larry Levitt, who tweeted “This recent bill from Senator Cory Gardner provides some protections for people with pre-existing conditions, but it leaves out a big one: Insurance companies would still be able to deny insurance entirely to people who are sick.”
