Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition Action Fund (CIRCAF) announced their endorsement of John Hickenlooper for U.S. Senate, calling him a “true pro-immigrant champion.” As Governor, Hickenlooper paved the way for immigrants in Colorado by allowing DACA recipients to access in-state tuition and granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants. Meanwhile, Senator Cory Gardner stood by President Trump as he tried to permanently end DACA — risking the livelihoods of 15,000 DREAMers that call Colorado home.
After last night’s Telemundo debate, DACA recipients rallied behind Hickenlooper because of his strong record of fighting for immigrants while he was governor and called out Senator Gardner for having taken no action to protect Colorado’s immigrant community. “Now more than ever, we need true pro-immigrant champions working on our behalf at every level of government,” said CIRC Action Fund Managing Director Alex Galaena. “Each of these candidates understand that no matter where we come from or what our color is, immigrants come to our country for a better life for their families. That idea is what ties us together. CIRC Action is proud to endorse these candidates and work with them on building the future we want to see, together.”
“I’m honored to have the support of Colorado’s leading organization to advance the rights of immigrants in Colorado,” said Hickenlooper. “Since day one, the Trump administration has threatened the livelihoods of immigrants across our country by separating families and inhumanly detaining children in cages — it’s a nightmare. Senator Gardner seems to think this is the right approach because he has said nothing to decry these injustices. In the Senate, I will work hand in hand with immigration advocates and other leaders to implement comprehensive, humane immigration reform and finally shine a light down the pathway to full citizenship.”
