Today, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) announced their endorsement of John Hickenlooper for U.S. Senate, citing his commitment to supporting educators and working families across Colorado.
During this unprecedented back to school season, Hickenlooper has spent weeks listening to parents and educators as they deal with the difficulties of schooling during COVID. His campaign also recently released its education policy agenda, “Building a Stronger Education System,” addressing the shortcomings exposed by COVID as well as longer-term problems and the growing inequality in our education system.
“Under President Trump, Betsy DeVos, and Senator Gardner, Washington is not working for Colorado teachers — we need a change.” said AFT Colorado Executive VP and COPE Chair Bernadette Jiron. “We’re proud to support John Hickenlooper, a proven leader who cares about Colorado families and will stand up for educators in the Senate. John understands that teachers and students cannot be bargaining chips in Washington’s political games, and he’ll fight to get schools the resources they need so that every child has access to a high quality public education.”
“I’m honored to have earned the endorsement of the American Federation of Teachers,” said John Hickenlooper. “Every person in America has the right to a quality education, and we need to support our educators and schools to make that aspiration a reality. COVID-19 has brought to the forefront challenges that have long existed in our education system, but rather than addressing those issues, the Senate took a month-long vacation. It’s clear we need to change Washington, and I’m excited to work with the AFT to make that happen.”
