Hickenlooper Will Take On the NRA, While Gardner Puts the Gun Lobby Before Colorado

Four Years Ago Today, Gardner Voted Against a Bipartisan Bill to Prevent Terrorists from Buying Guns

Four years ago today, Senator Cory Gardner voted to defeat a bipartisan amendment to close the terror loophole and block people on the no-fly list from purchasing firearms. That’s one piece of Gardner’s long record of appeasing the gun lobby, which has contributed nearly $4 million to support his campaign. Here are the facts:

  • 2013: Cory Gardner Opposed Banning Assault Weapons and Passing Colorado’s Magazine Ban, Which Hickenlooper Signed Into Law
  • 2015: Cory Gardner Voted Against Expanding Background Checks
  • 2016: For Third Time, Cory Gardner Voted Against Bipartisan Amendment Restricting People On The No-Fly List From Purchasing Firearms
  • 2018: Gardner Held Up Bipartisan Effort to Improve Background Checks
  • 2019: Gardner Refused to Answer Questions on Red Flag Laws and Refused to Take a Position on House-Passed Background Check Bill

As Governor, John Hickenlooper took on the NRA and passed some of the strongest gun safety laws in the country, including universal background checks and limiting high capacity magazines. John has a plan to take that fight to Washington, earning him endorsements from Giffords PAC, Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action, and local gun safety leaders like state Senator Rhonda Fields and state Representative Tom Sullivan.

“Colorado has seen too many tragic shootings, and John Hickenlooper had the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and take real action,” said state Senator Rhonda Fields. “John was there for my community, victims, and survivors after the Aurora shooting. And unlike Cory Gardner, I know he’ll be there for us in the U.S. Senate.”

“Senator Gardner is bought and paid for by the NRA — it’s unacceptable,” said Hickenlooper. “Time and again, Washington has failed to take action on gun violence because of politicians like Senator Gardner refusing to put their communities first. In Colorado, we took on the NRA — and we won. We passed some of the strongest gun safety laws in the nation, and I’m ready to take that same fight to Washington.”
