On Wednesday, May 20, former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper held a U.S. Senate campaign event over the phone that was focused on the Eastern Plains and the effect of COVID-19 on agriculture.
Darrell Hanavan, the former executive director of Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee, and John Stulp, former Colorado agriculture commissioner, joined the call to detail how the ag industry has responded.
Hickenlooper pitched his candidacy for U.S. Senate by touting his roots in science, small business and an effective governing style when he served as the mayor of Denver and governor of Colorado. The geologist turned brew-pub owner turned politician said he can bring solutions to problems that aren’t addressed in Washington, D.C.
“I’m a small business guy who got into public service because I thought there had to be better and more innovative ways for government to work,” Hickenlooper said. “Small business is the backbone of this country, and this crisis has made it more clear than ever that Washington is filled with people who don’t have that experience.”
Hickenlooper continued this criticism, stating many of the economic relief efforts for COVID-19 bypassed small businesses and went to large, publicly traded companies.
