Today, John Hickenlooper announced he is running for U.S. Senate to take on the Washington political games hurting Colorado and bring people together to get things done, saying in a video released online, “I’m not done fighting for the people of Colorado.”
In the announcement filmed at Wynkoop, the brewpub John built into a successful business that helped revitalize a once-neglected part of Denver, the former mayor and governor condemned Washington’s failure to act on prescription drug costs and climate change, as well as the effort by Washington Republicans – including Senator Cory Gardner – to gut protections for health care coverage for pre-existing conditions.
“I’ve always said Washington was a lousy place for a guy like me who knows how to get things done – but this is no time to walk away from the table,” said Hickenlooper. “We ought to be working together to move this country forward and stop the political nonsense. I know changing Washington is hard, but I want to give it a shot. I’m not done fighting for the people of Colorado.”

John Hickenlooper didn’t take a familiar path to public office. After working as a geologist, he became a brewer and small business owner whose successful pub was a part of the revitalization of a neglected warehouse district in Denver. John’s independence was a hallmark of his record as mayor, where he brought people together to get things done. It was the same approach John took as governor, where he helped take the state from 40th in job creation to the top economy in the country. John is running for Senate to make Washington work for Coloradans by bringing people together to lower health care and prescription drug costs, to keep our families safe from gun violence, and protect the state’s public lands while also combating climate change.

Trying to knock out protections for pre-existing conditions? That could be devastating for hundreds of thousands of Coloradans.
Playing games while prescription drug prices soar? That’s costing people more than they can afford.
And don’t get me started on the shots they’re taking at public lands, leaving them to developers instead of sportsmen.
I don’t think Cory Gardner understands that the games he’s playing with Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are hurting the people of Colorado.
We ought to be working together to move this country forward and stop the political nonsense.
We’re running out of time to confront climate change. We’ve got to help families who are crushed by prescription drug costs. And everybody ought to have a shot at building a better future.
I know we can do that.
