DENVER – The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 7 (UFCW 7), which represents more than 25,000 workers in Colorado and Wyoming, today announced its official endorsement of former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper (D) for the U.S. Senate. The announcement comes 41 days before the November 3rd general election– one of the most consequential elections in modern U.S. history.

Kim Cordova, President of UFCW Local 7, which represents 27,000 workers in Colorado and Wyoming, issued the following statement on behalf of the Union:

“This year, over twenty thousand Local 7’s members were deemed ‘essential workers’ by the government, and as such, risked their lives daily as they cared for hospital patients, processed meat on crowded plant lines, and restocked shelves for anxious customers at Colorado’s grocery stores. UFCW Local 7 has had over 300 members contract COVID-19 and lost nine of our members to the virus.

“Governor John Hickenlooper is a long-time ally of working people, and has a track record of getting things done for all Coloradans, not just those at the top. We know he will deliver on the issues that our members and working families care about: jobs, worker safety, fair wages, and affordable health care. We proudly stand alongside our Union sisters and brothers of the United Farm Workers, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 105, the Colorado Education Association, and the American Federation of Teachers Colorado, and others who have put their support behind John Hickenlooper.”

“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7,” said John Hickenlooper. “These essential workers have stepped up and gone above and beyond to deliver for our country and keep us all fed. We need to be doing everything we can to protect them during and after COVID-19 by securing better wages and benefits. In the Senate, I promise to fight side by side with the UFCW to advance the rights of essential workers, and together we will recover from this pandemic stronger than ever.”

Local 7, the largest Union in Colorado is affiliated with United Food and Commercial Workers International Union which represents over 1.3 million workers in the United States and Canada, and is one of the largest private sector Unions in North America. UFCW members work in a wide range of industries, including retail food, food processing, agriculture, retail sales, and health care.
