Hickenlooper Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Hearing GOP Lawsuit to Overturn Affordable Care Act

If Lawsuit Backed by Gardner Succeeds, Hundreds of Thousands of Coloradans Predicted to Lose Coverage

Today, John Hickenlooper released the following statement on the announcement that the U.S. Supreme Court will take up the GOP lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act and end its protections for pre-existing conditions:

“Hundreds of thousands of Coloradans rely on the Affordable Care Act’s protections for pre-existing conditions and access to affordable health care. This all hangs in the balance as the Supreme Court hears the lawsuit that is backed by Washington Republicans like Senator Cory Gardner to overturn the ACA.”

“Here in Colorado, we created a bipartisan Medicaid Expansion plan and cut our uninsured rate by two-thirds. Meanwhile, Senator Gardner has voted at least 13 times to repeal, defund, or block the ACA and supports Washington Republicans’ lawsuit to overturn the law. If Republicans’ lawsuit succeeds, the rug would be yanked out from under people across Colorado, including 2.4 million Coloradans with preexisting conditions and hundreds of thousands of others who could lose their coverage or see their rates shoot up.”

“Republican attacks on the ACA — including cutting funding for the Center for Disease Control — have jeopardized our ability to confront dangerous epidemics like the coronavirus. We need new leadership in Washington to protect and expand access to affordable health care and lower prescription drug prices instead of playing political games that put lives at risk.”
